Join us for a class on
Transforming the Inner Self
A Chassidic Discourse by
Rabbi Schnuer Zalman of Liadi..
Taught by Rabbi Michel Gurkov
|
|
|
In TRANSFORMING THE INNER SELF, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of Chabad-Chasidism, teaches that each of us possesses certain character traits that are "animalistic," or materialistic, in nature. Though not inherently evil, these traits can lead a person toward a life of material indulgence and spiritual indifference.
Our charge, then, is to "sacrifice" and transform the animal within, to refine our animal traits and utilize them in our pursuit of spiritual perfection. Following the meditative process described in this discourse, our minds become a chamber for spiritual thought, which alters the very composition of our materialistic traits

The Book Club is a reading group for women that will focus on books by Jewish authors who wrote about Jewish themes and Jewish life in different periods and places. Women meet once a month at one of our member's houses in order to discuss different issues and topics from the books and share our opinions.
Wednesday, May 7th, 2008
8:00 pm
At the home of Chani Gurkov
194 Ratzer Road in Wayne, NJ07470
The book's title is:
"A Guest for the Night"
This book highlights the pre-war Europe and the destruction of the Shtetl.
"A Guest for the Night" is available for purchase on www.amazon.com and is listed on the "List of 100 Greatest Works of Modern Jewish Literature" that was compiled by a group of important Jewish writers as part of a project undertaken by a Jewish organization dedicated to preserving Jewish literature.
It is recommended that each member choose a book from this list for each monthly meeting as the list contains an amazing variety of fascinating books to choose from that offer a profound view of Jewish life and Jewish issues by the finest writers. You are more than welcome to give your own suggestions for reading if you want to recommend a book that is not on the list.
We think the reading group will be a lot of fun socially and will be intellectually very enriching.
Sincerely,
Chani Gurkov & Einat Pinsker
